Unseen passage for class 6 with question and answer

1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

How do humans and other animals communicate with each other? Of course, humans communicate verbally by talking and making other sounds like laughing. Most other mammals also communicate by making sounds as well. Sophisticated intelligent mammals, especially dolphins and whales, possess welldeveloped verbal skills and communicate with high-pitched sounds that carry through the water. Researchers are actively working on interpreting these sounds in order to understand dolphin and whale language. Verbal communication is accompanied by non-verbal body language that also conveys meaning and emotion. Body language includes facial expression, posture, position of the arms and many other cues that help in understanding the meaning of verbal communication. In the absence of verbal communication, body language can be sufficient to convey meaning. Sometimes merely a stern look from Mom or Dad or a teacher, lets you know that you are not behaving properly; no words are necessary!

Unseen Passage with multiple choice questions for Class 6

2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

The Emperor Penguin is the world’s largest and tallest penguin. It is also the heaviest penguin, with some individuals recorded at nearly 100 pounds. Adults have a black head, back, tail, and black wings. The under parts are dingy white. The sides of the neck are marked with a large golden or yellow stripe. In addition, there is a varying amount of gold on the upper breast. Like most penguins, the Emperor Penguin has thick, waterproof feathers that cover the entire body except for the bill and feet. Emperor Penguins normally live about 20 years in the wild, though some individuals have been recorded at 40 years of age.

The Emperor Penguin is found throughout the Antarctic perimeter. It is the only species of penguin to breed in the Antarctic winter. Breeding takes place about 60 miles from the coast in the Antarctic interior, where temperature regularly drops to -40 degrees Celsius. The trek from the Antarctic coastline to the breeding grounds was the inspiration for “March of the Penguins”.

Female Emperor Penguins lay a single egg in May or June. After the egg has been laid, the female must immediately feed in the ocean. First, the egg is carefully transported to the male, who incubates the egg under a brood patch that rests above the feet. Occasionally, the transfer is unsuccessful and the egg rolls onto the ice and instantaneously freezes.

The male will incubate the egg for up to 65 days. During this time, he will not eat a single meal. On particularly cold days, hundreds of male penguins may gather together in a compact huddle to warm themselves in the pounding Antarctic winds. In about two months, the female returns and locates her mate and chick by sound. She regurgitates food stored in her stomach to feed the growing chick. The male then takes his turn feeding in the ocean and returns after about a month, at which points both parents tend to the chick by regurgitating food and keeping it off the ice. Once the chick is about seven weeks old, it joins other chicks in a crèche to keep warm. Populations of Emperor Penguins are thought to be stable. Estimates indicate about 200,000 breeding pairs.

Fire: Friend And Foe

Early man did not know about fire. Yet, he must have seen natural fires like lightning and volcanoes. He must have felt frightened by them. They must also have puzzled him. Long ago, there were no firemen. When fire broke out, people formed human chains and passed buckets of water from a well or a pond to put out the fire.

Today, however we know that fire is a chemical reaction. Three things are needed to cause a fire. These are oxygen, fuel and heat. Fuel is available in many forms. Wood, coal, cooking gas and petrol are some examples of fuel. The fuel causes fire in the presence of oxygen when it is heated. In modern life, we use fire in many ways. It cooks our food, warms our homes, and produces electricity. However, it is only the controlled fire which serves us well.

There are many ways to put out an uncontrollable fire. We should try to prevent oxygen from reaching the fire. Small fires are put out using damp blanket or sack. 9. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

It is bad to have food stuck between your teeth for long period of time. This is because food attracts germs, germs produce acid, and acid hurts your teeth and gums. Flossing helps to remove the food that gets stuck between your teeth. This explains why flossing helps to keep your mouth healthy, but some doctors say that flossing can be also good for your heart. It may seem strange that something you do for your teeth can have any effect on your heart. Doctors have come up with a few ideas about how flossing works to keep your heart healthy. One idea is that the germs that hurt your teeth can leave the mouth and travel into your blood. Germs

that get into the blood can then attack your heart. Another idea is based on the fact that when there are too many germs in your mouth, the body tries to fight against these germs. For some reason, the way the body fights these mouth germs may end up weakening the heart over time.

The theory that flossing your teeth helps to keep your heart healthy might not be true. But every doctor agrees that flossing is a great way to keep your teeth healthy. So even if flossing does not help your heart, it is sure to help your teeth. This is enough of a reason for everyone to floss their teeth every day.

Discursive Passage for Class 6

12. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

Dragonflies are large and strong. They have big, compound eyes, which means that each eye is made up of thousands of tiny eyes, allowing the dragonfly to see in all directions. They are easily recognizable because of their size. Their large wings are always held out straight, both while in flight and while resting. Dragonflies congregate to hunt, catch and eat insects. Dragonflies are harmless to humans; they neither bite nor sting. In fact, you could even say that they are helpful, since they eat the insects that tend to annoy us the most, like gnats, mosquitoes, and flies. Dragonflies are found all over the world, almost always near water. Dragonflies like warm weather; in fact, you won’t see them at all until temperatures reach at least the mid 60s. They need to warm up in the sun during the mornings before they take off, and they fly ― occasionally landing somewhere for a rest ― for most of the day. Dragonflies are some of the earliest flying creatures to inhabit our planet, and belong to an ancient insect group called the odonata.

Unseen Passage for Class 6

13. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

Today, there are six species of pelicans living. Two of these, the White or Rosy Pelican and the Spotted- billed Pelican, are found in India.

Little is known why the bird is called a pelican. It is that since a very long time Greeks, the Romans and most Europeans have known this bird by this name. However, the Portuguese and Spanish call it Alcatraz. A rocky island in San Francisco Bay in the United States is called Alcatras. The word literally means a place of no escape, a prison. Pelicans once lived on this rocky island. Of the six species of pelican, only one, the Brown Pelican of the Americas, is a coastal and marine bird. It is a fish-catcher, smashing headlong into the water with a tremendous splash. Other Pelican species are highly social. Their food is fish and their feeding strategy is charming. On an average, a pelican eats three kilos of fish a day. Once full, the pelicans either continue floating on water or clumsily walk onto some dry spot, where they spend time resting.

With a weighty body and a ridiculous large beak, one would think that pelicans find flying impossible. But they are among the beat fliers of the bird kingdom. Only during take-off the pelican needs some effort. Once airborne it is a strong flier that can fly for hours. The heaviest pelican weighs 11 kilos.
